Grade 6
Students in sixth grade learn measurement and reducing fractions. Tens and hundreds pieces are used as a hands-on manipulative. We emphasize using math to model real-life situations, connect the topics with science, and learn to solve problems without needing calculators. Projects include concept mapping to diagram connections between vocabulary terms and drawing models to add fractions.
Grade 7 Pre-algebra
In seventh grade, students practice reducing fractions, solving equations, using the greatest common factor and least common multiple. Also, they use models for adding fractions and algebra tiles to model equations. We emphasize using math in real-life situations, connecting math with science, and solving problems without needing calculators. One project is using a student-designed survey to write and reduce fractions.
Grade 8 Algebra I
Topics for eighth students include solving equations and graphing, especially in real-life and business situations. We connect math with science and explain how to use calculators (including graphing) with more challenging problems. An example of a hands-on experiment is measuring the slope of a ramp and how it changes with changing the rise and run. This course is preparation for geometry and Algebra II in high school. Projects include running a business where students create a business and a brochure to sell a product, make an advertising brochure, and write equations relating profit and expenses, and using algebra tiles to model equations.
Grades 6-8
MathCounts is a competition (against other schools) available for 8 students from each grade. Students may also participate in the Math Scavenger Hunt at Covenant High School.
